What are circle lenses?

A circle contact lens, also known as a big eye contact lens and circle lens, is a cosmetic contact lens that makes the eye's iris appear larger. It has become a trend in Japan, South Korea and China and is largely produced in these countries.
Circle lens make one's eyes appear larger and come in a variety of colors and effects.
Similar to the diameter of regular contact lenses, circle lens have no more than 15mm (diameter) since larger sizes would be harmful to the eyes at daily wear. When the diameter of the circle lens is described as 16mm or 18mm, it is only the provided visual effect of the circle lens The difference between the two types of lenses is that circle lens are tinted not only in areas that cover the iris of the eye, but also prominently in the extra-wide outer rim of the lens. The result is the appearance of a bigger, wider iris and create an illusion of large eyes. (Wiki)

Popular brands include: E.O.S, Geo Medical, Vassen, ColourVue...

Before wearing your circle lenses:

What you will need:
  • Contact lens case, which shops commonly send as a freebie when you purchase your lenses. You can find from very simple ones, like the ones pictured under, to very cute and original ones!

  • Multi purpose solution, which can be found at any pharmacy/drugstore/chemist's shop. The solution needed for circle lenses is no different from the one used for normal lenses. They also sometimes come with a free lens case.
  • And of course, you will need contact lenses!

Before opening the vial:
Circle lenses come inside a vial when you receive them. Before opening this vial, there are some things you may need to check.
  • Has it been opened by somebody else? Make sure the vial still has it's metal seal on, covering the rubber cap that's under it. If your vial only has a rubber cap but no steel seal, do not use your lenses as they may have been opened or even used by another person.
  • Check vial's expiry date. This must NOT be confused with the lenses expiry date. The vial's expiry date refers to the solution inside the vial; circle lenses normally expire after one year of use (unless specified).
  • Expiry Date
  • Check that the power/prescription is correct. This is normally indicated on the lid.

Preparing your lenses:
  • Prepare lenses for use. Soak the lenses at least 8 hours / overnight in multipurpose solution. NEVER use the lenses directly after taking them out of the vial.
  •  To soak the lenses, you first need to Clean and sterilize the case. Wash the case thoroughly and fill it up with the solution.

Using your circle lenses:
Inserting your lenses:
  • Wash your hands! A very simple but important step that you should do before touching your lenses. Was your hands and make sure to rinse them off well. You don't want bacteria in your eyes, but you don't want soap either!
  • Place your lens on your index finger. Whilst doing so, check that it isn't inside out.
  • To insert the lens into your eye, pull your upper and lower eyelids apart with your spare hand to open your eye.
  • Once placed on eye, blink until the lens moves to it's correct position.
  • It is recommended to put your makeup on AFTER. Doing it before is risking getting makeup inside your eyes as you put the lenses on.

Whilst wearing your lenses:
  • Avoid wearing lenses on very windy days, as they may make your eyes dry faster.
  • Never sleep whilst wearing your lenses.
  • Don't wear them for more than 8 hours.
  • Remember: Lenses are replaceable, your eyes aren't. If you feel any discomfort that does not disappear, take lenses off immediately.

After wearing your circle lenses:
Before removing:
  • Wash your hands. (Yes, again.)
  • Change the solution in your case.  Do this every time you wear your lenses.

Removal:
  • Keep your eye open as you carefully pinch the lens with both your index finger and thumb.
  • If needed, hold your lids open with your other hand the same way you'd do when inserting the lens.
  • Store your lenses in the case. Before doing this I have the habit of squirting some solution over them just in case any makeup has stuck to them.
  • Make sure you stored the correct lens in each compartment of the case. Always store your right eye lens in one and the left in other. This way, if you have an eye infection you can prevent it from spreading to the other eye. It is also ideal if you don't wear plano lenses.

Lens care/other tips:
  • Make sure to properly close the lense case after use and store it in a dry, cool place. Doing so will prevent bacteria growth, the solution from evaporating and your lenses from drying out.
  • Even if you haven't worn your lenses, replace the solution in the case frequently. I tend to do this at least once a week to keep them fresh and disinfected.
  • Change your lens case every now and then for a new one.
  • Make sure to remember when the lenses expire.
